Pride of Place: Works from the Estate of Sydney F. Martin is a select 26-lot sale that highlights the passionate collecting activity and discerning eye of Sydney Martin, an avid and early collector of Pennsylvania Impressionists and other Pennsylvania-related works. The June 4 auction is led by Edward Redfield's Spring Veil, one of the largest canvases the artist ever produced, which depicts a powerful view of the Delaware Valley in full Spring. Other highlights include a Chester County landscape by Daniel Garber, a rare Morgan Colt as well as several works by John F. Folinsbee.
Edward Willis Redfield
(American, 1869–1965) Spring Veil
Of all the vistas most often captured by Redfield, his spring scenes are the most powerful and sought-after, as evidenced by Spring Veil, one of the largest canvases Redfield ever painted–a widely exhibited work that Redfield kept his entire life. Here, the artist presents a bird's-eye view of his beloved Delaware Valley with a vigorous and energetic impasto that echoes his joyful feeling towards Mother Nature.

Daniel Garber
(American, 1880–1958) Brandywine Meadows
Although Daniel Garber painted most of his oils in Bucks County, this present work was commissioned by a West Chester collector and depicts a rather unique view of the Brandywine River. Still, it channels all the hallmarks of Garber's celebrated style, namely a rich color palette, a subtle attention to light, as well as picturesque elements that denote an idyllic rural life.

Fern Isabel Coppedge
(American, 1883–1951) Winter From Skillman's
The present work is a quintessential work from Coppedge's mature years, as revealed by the bold and contrasting hues of the composition. Painted in the artist's favored format, it depicts an iconic stretching view of the village of Lambertville (New Jersey) as seen from New Hope (Pennsylvania), specifically from Skillman's – a local institution.
